In 1987 ASTM adopted the practice of using the maturity method and published the standard we know as ASTM C 1074.
Applying this method requires a few initial steps to take:
- Defining specific characteristics for each unique concrete mixes.
- Establishing the relationship between maturity and strength.
- Estimation of local maturity and local strength.
Base temperatures are temperature parameters to be used when designing a mix.
Activation energy is initial energy which will kick in the curing process, it is normally inherent in the mix, the cast and the whole environment.
Mix designs (in our terminology compounds) used in production are required to be prepared in 3-4 temperature sets and tempered accordingly. Concrete.fit uses a 4+ method.
Base temperature 1 should be in the bottom end of the range, base 2 should be on the other end, while the third should be somewhere in the mid-point. Using more essentially means that we distribute evenly.
It is required to measure product strength at the very same time, and regularly.
For this reason, it is evident that using a digital instrumentation method, like concrete.fit, is the best practice.
We use strength-aging coefficients to define tempering. This is import when the production is a controlled environment with hot beds.
It is a proper method to use penetration resistance methods as well.
- Use two to four sets of 9 cylinders or cubes.
Note, that in this example we use 2 sets of cubes.
- Prepare 2×9 cubes.
- Prepare compound mix as per design using the very same principles, materials, ratios and mixing method.
- Put 1 sensor into 1 cube in the sets. (2 sensors)
- Start the application. (The system will start showing graphs and predictions when after pouring as temperature and humidity will change as concrete meets with the sensor.)
- Pour in the concrete.
- Temper cubes as our standard or yours defines it.
- It is required to check strength with a different method in every 1-4 hours depending on mix design. We finish testing normally at the 28th hour or earlier but in cases we test for 28 days.
- We record average maturity indexes and belonging average strength.
- It is then possible to have an adjusted characteristic.
- Prepare cast or formwork.
- Fit in sensors and start the application.
- Pour in concrete.
- The application will start measurement accordingly. And will signal check-points and set alarms.

As per standards you need to use as much as the number of your main reinforcements. In general this means 2 sensors. The maximum we came across was 7.
The number of sensors you use does not change our rates, as with us, you pay per production.
